Ducote to Bring Louisiana-style Tacos to White Star Market in Mid City

When Clark Gaines and his wife began developing the concept for White Star Market—which is expected to open early next year in Mid City—one of the first people they consulted was local chef Jay Ducote.

Gaines wanted to discuss the food hall concept with Ducote and see if the former Food Network Starfinalist would be interested in helping to promote it. Ducote’s initial reaction was that it sounded like a very cool concept and a good way for people to get into the culinary business at a reasonable startup cost.

White Star Market, a hall that will have nearly a dozen different food and drink booths, is the first tenant in the Square 46 mixed-use development on Government Street.

The market will take up about 6,000 square feet in one of the two buildings in Square 46, said Joshua Hoffpauir, the architect who is developing the old Giamanco’s restaurant site at 4646 Government St.

Hoffpauir said the market will be set up like the St. Roch Market in New Orleans. Diners can purchase food and drinks from different booths.

Despite some initial fears, proposed Government Street beer garden gets support of community, Planning Commission

It’s almost a guarantee that if a bar is planning to open too close to a residential neighborhood in East Baton Rouge Parish, the chambers of City Hall will be filled with opponents rallying against it.

On Monday evening, residents and homeowners from Mid City — skewing a little younger than the average group of residents attending a municipal meeting — filled the council chambers and implored the Planning Commission to allow a proposed beer garden to open at the corner of Government and Steele Boulevard.

Proposals for redevelopment of Westmoreland center in Mid City include mix of residential, retail

Five groups of developers have submitted proposals to Catholic High School to redevelop the Westmoreland Village Shopping Center on Government Street in Mid City, which the school acquired in late 2010.

Gene Tullier, president of Catholic High, says he is very happy with the proposals the school has received because each includes a unique idea none of the other proposals has, and they all featured a mixed-use component with residential and retail ideas.
